DNS records tell the internet where to send visitors and email for your domain. This guide shows you how to add or change the most common records in cPanel.
This guide is for domains that use HostCloud nameservers. If your domain uses Cloudflare or another DNS provider, make these changes there instead. Not sure? See Where to edit your DNS.

Common record types

The examples are placeholders. Use the exact values from the service you’re connecting.

Open Zone Editor

1

Log in to cPanel

Go to https://cpanel.yourdomain.com, or use the control panel link from your hosting welcome email.
2

Find Zone Editor

Type Zone Editor in the search box at the top of cPanel and open it.
3

Open your domain

Click Manage next to the domain you want to change. You’ll see all its current records.

Add a record

1

Choose the record type

Click the option to add a record and choose the type: A, CNAME, MX or TXT.
2

Fill in the details

  • Name: the part of your domain the record is for, such as yourdomain.com or www.yourdomain.com.
  • TTL: how long other servers may remember the record, in seconds. Leave the default unless you’ve been told otherwise.
  • Value: the IP address, hostname, mail server or text you were given. For MX records, also enter the priority. Lower numbers are tried first.
3

Save

Save the record. It usually starts working within minutes, but can take longer. See How long DNS propagation takes.

Edit or delete a record

In the same list, find the record and choose to edit or delete it.
Changing or deleting the wrong record can take your website or email offline. Note down the old value before you change anything, so you can put it back.
Setting up email with another provider, such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365? They give you the exact MX and TXT records to add. Remove old MX records you no longer use, or some email may go to the wrong place.
Still stuck? Open a ticket with your domain name and the records you’re trying to add.
